Wings of Art (Ghana Edition)

Last month (July), I was fortunate to return to Ghana, Africa to visit my kids at FEDEP International School. Last year, I was able to create an art program for the kids. Unfortunately, the school nor the kids had the resources such as crayons, colored pencils, etc. So I was able to purchase the little amount of supplies that I could while I was there.

This time around I had to go back to visit my kids since I promised to visit them. I knew I wanted to bring them something, which is when I remembered how happy they were when I purchased the little amount of supplies that I did last year.

So I decided, why not spread the word about these kids who love to draw, but do not have the resources to do so. I am happy to say that the word did spread about my trip to Ghana and how I was collecting art supplies for the kids.

We received the following supplies:

Colored pencils,
Pencils,
Construction Paper,
Glue,
Stickers,
Markers,
Scissors,
Folders,
Pens, etc.

The kids were listening to the Educational Director as he explained to them about the
"surprise".
They were amazed to see what was being given to them.

The iPad, probably the year's biggest new gadget made quite a stir when it hit the market. But who would have thought it would become the modern day canvas for many artists. Videos have been popping up all over the web of artist creating beautiful work. Check out the vids below:

Embrace Haitian Art

Blessings Beautiful People,

I would like to cordially invite you to "Restoring Haitian Pride through Art", which is an artistic event in showcasing Haitian art throughout the American community.

Before and after the unfortunate earthquake tragedy on January 12, 2010 the people of Haiti have undoubtedly fostered a rich artistic community.

For which, Haiti continues to serve as a reflection as the first Black Democratic Nation.

Haiti is a country that continues to face adversities. As a Haitian American, I believe I must

Restore,

Cultivate

&

Educate

people about the Haitian culture through art.

Haitian people have a story to tell through their art. This event is a WONDERFUL exploration into the Haitian culture that is bound to inspire art lovers and those who have a cultureal interest in the Caribbean island.

Please help WINGS OF ART and the other sponsors in
cultivating the Haitian culture and the Arts.

Art Around the World: Slovakian Graffiti

When you see graffiti on the street, do you immediately think of:
A bad neighborhood?
Scribble on the wall?
or
Vandalism?

I wouldn't be surprised if many people today thought this way. But graffiti is actually a beautiful form of visual art that has often been misunderstood from its beginning. In fact, graffiti is considered one of the four elements of hip hop (along with emceeing, DJing and B-Boying) and has been the visuals for all things hip hop on .... all things! From trains, to walls, to paper, to public property graffiti has made its mark and has spread all over the world.

One country in particular has embraced the old-school form of visual hip hop the most, Slovakia. With spray cans, markers, inks and scratches some beautiful & intricate works of art have been created on both illegal and legal spaces.

Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself

The Loom

Peace,

Saturday, Feb 6 WOA went out to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to check out The Loom and support Barrelhousenyc.

This spot had a diverse crowd, as well as various forms of art.
There were so many rooms with a variety of creativity such as:
Jewelry,
Apparel,
Painting,
Photography,
Yawn selling, and a Rock band to entertain.

WOA is all about creativity, the arts, and seeing inspiring talents showcase their work, as well as seeing people giving them the opportunity to do so.

I spoke to the creator of the clothing design called Closet Envi, who told me the owner of the building is giving anyone who wants a room to showcase their work.
An opportunity to have a room for a month!

True love!
Love to see when people give young talents an opportunity to make their Dream a Reality.

B.N.E. Gallery Exhibition

Greetings Artistic Beings,

I was fortunate enough to attend the B.N.E. gallery exhibition on W. 43 rd street with Brittany and Dominic. Brittany was telling me about these mysterious stickers she was seeing around Brooklyn with the initials B.N.E. So we decided to check it out.
When we got there we spoke to the host in finding out more about this graffiti artist, but come to find out he couldn't tell us much. All we know is, the artist is a male who could be in his early 30's..no one know's his race/ethicnity or what B.N.E stands for.
When you see his work he just places B.N.E. on crazy logos like the Burger King sign, Starbucks, Coco-Cola, and etc.
We heard he's been to New York, Japan, San Franciso, Bangkok, and etc. He rarely gives interviews and when he does he doesn't want his identity being shown. So the only picture you see of him is in a hoodie, sweats, and kicks.
Well check out his stuff it's pretty dope! Not really the artwork, but the concept and mystery behind B.N.E.
He leaves everyone in suspense....WHAT IS B.N.E? Will we EVER know??????
